Putting the subway maps onto your iPod isn’t all too difficult. First you’ll need an iPod Photo. If you can’t find the iPod photo on the Apple website, it’s because all iPods (not counting the iPod Mini and Shuffle) are color versions which come with photo support. Once you’ve got that, follow these simple instructions:
Step One
Download your map of choice from our site and save the .zip file somewhere where you can access it.
Step Deux
Unzip or unpack the zip file. Can’t unzip a file? Download WinZip for the PC or Stuff-It Expander for OSX.
Step Drei
From here it gets tricky. There are a few methods to adding images to your iPod. If you have iPhoto for the Mac (version 4.0.3 or higher, apparently) or Adobe Photoshop Album for the PC (or Mac, I s’pose) you can create separate albums.
I am going to assume that you do not have iPhoto or Adobe Photoshop Album and we’re just going to use the simple folder solution.
With your iPod connected, open up iTunes. I’m assuming you have iTunes. No? Get it here.
Once you’ve got iTunes open, click the nice little iPod button in the bottom-right corner of the window. It looks like this: iPod Button
Step Quattro
If there are no subfolders, that should be the last step. If you’re using a zip file that has subfolders in it, such as the All Buroughs zip file for the New York City set of maps, you have to follow these additional steps:
Agencies would do well to find ways to work with folks with good ideas instead of just turning loose the lawyers.
Might the MTA have overreacted and in doing so deprived commuters of something useful?
